FAQs 21. Dealing with Pests and Diseases

1. Are vertical towers less prone to pests and diseases?
Yes, vertical towers are elevated and compact, making them less accessible to ground pests. However, common garden pests like aphids, mealybugs, and fungal infections can still occur.

2. What are the most common pests in vertical gardening?

Aphids (tiny green/black insects on leaves)

Mealybugs (white cottony patches)

Whiteflies

Fungal diseases like powdery mildew or damping-off in seedlings

3. Can I use chemical pesticides in my tower garden?
It’s not recommended. Instead, use organic and homemade solutions like neem oil spray, garlic-chilli spray, or soap water to manage pests without harming the environment or your vegetables.

4. How often should I spray for pest prevention?
A weekly spray of neem oil (5 ml in 1 liter of water) or soap water (2 drops of liquid soap in 1 liter) helps keep most pests away naturally.

5. What should I do if I see white powder or black spots on leaves?
These are signs of fungal infections. Immediately remove affected leaves and spray with a mild baking soda solution (1 tsp in 1 liter water) or neem oil.

6. Are there any companion plants that repel pests?
Yes! Marigold, basil, mint, garlic, and tulsi act as natural pest repellents and can be planted alongside main crops in some pockets.

7. Should I remove infected plants completely?
If the infection is severe and spreading, it’s safer to remove the infected plant to protect nearby crops and disinfect the pocket before replanting.
