यह श्लोक और उससे जुड़ी कथा रामायण काल की है, किन्तु यह वर्तमान में कहीं अधिक उपयोगी है.
बात तब की है, जब भगवान राम के बाण से रावण धाराशायी होकर गिर गया. तब श्रीराम ने अपने अनुज लक्ष्मण को उसके पास जाकर शिक्षा लेने को कहा.
भ्रातृभक्त लक्ष्मण आश्चर्य से अपने बड़े भाई की ओर देखने लगे.
मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम अपने अनुज के भावों को समझकर बोले कि इस संसार में नीति, राजनीति, शक्ति को समझने वाला महान विद्वान विदा हो रहा है. आखिरी समय में उसका बताया ज्ञान अनमोल है, इसलिए हे लक्ष्मण! शंका को त्यागकर उसके पास जाओ!
कहा जाता है कि लक्ष्मण अनमने ढंग से जाकर रावण के सिर के पास खड़े हो गए, और रावण मौन रहा.
क्रुद्ध भाव से लौटकर लक्ष्मण वापस लौट गए और कहा कि 'भैया! अभी भी रावण का अहंकार समाप्त नहीं हुआ है, मेरे जाने के बावजूद वह कुछ नहीं बोल रहा है'.
सबके भावों को समझने वाले श्रीराम ने लक्ष्मण से कहा कि 'हे लक्ष्मण! कुछ पाने के लिए विनय आवश्यक है, इसलिए उसके चरणों के पास जाकर ज्ञान की आकांक्षा रखो'.
लक्ष्मण पुनः रावण के पास गए, और अपने चरणों के पास लक्ष्मण को बैठा देखकर रावण के मुंह से पहला सूत्रवाक्य निकला -
शुभस्य शीघ्रम् अशुभस्य कालहरणम्।
अर्थात, शुभ कार्य को जितनी जल्दी हो, करना शुरू कर देना चाहिए, वहीं अशुभ कार्य को जितना टाल सको, उतना टाल देना चाहिए.'
उदाहरण देते हुए रावण ने कहा कि हे लक्ष्मण! ब्रह्मा के वरदान से संरक्षित, मेरे जैसा विद्वान शुरू से ही जानता था कि राम कौन हैं. किन्तु, उनकी शरण में आने की बात को मैं टालता रहा. वहीं सीता हरण जैसा कुकृत्य करने में मैंने अतिशीघ्रता दिखलायी.
अगर मैं राम की शरण में आने जैसे शुभ कार्य को शीघ्र कर लेता तो आज मैं इस गति को क्यों प्राप्त होता?
रावण की 2 शिक्षाएं और भी हैं, किन्तु प्रश्न यह है कि शुभ कार्य को टालने की हमारी प्रवृति वास्तव में कितनी नुकसानदायक है?
खुद से कीजिये, नहीं तो किसी भी प्रोफेशनल की मदद लीजिये. जगह नहीं है, तो Vertical Towers में शुरू कीजिये.

Maryada Purushottam understood the feelings of his younger brother and said that a great scholar who understood policy, politics and power in this world is leaving. The knowledge given by him at the last moment is priceless, hence O Lakshman! Leave aside your doubts and go to Him!
It is said that Lakshman reluctantly went and stood near Ravana's head, and Ravana remained silent.
Lakshman returned in an angry mood and said, 'Brother! Even now Ravana's ego has not ended, despite my presence, he is not saying anything.
Shri Ram, who understood everyone's feelings, said to Lakshman, 'O Lakshman! Humility is necessary to achieve anything, hence go to his feet and aspire for knowledge.
Lakshman again went to Ravana, and seeing Lakshman sitting near his feet, the first sentence came out of Ravana's mouth -
Shubhasya Shighram Ashubhasya Kalharanam.
That is, auspicious work should be started as soon as possible, while inauspicious work should be postponed as much as possible.
Giving an example, Ravana said, O Lakshman! Protected by the boon of Brahma, a scholar like me knew from the beginning who Ram is! But, I kept postponing the idea of coming to his shelter. At the same time, I showed extreme haste in committing the evil act of kidnapping Sita.
If I had done the auspicious work like coming to Ram's shelter quickly, then why would I have achieved this death situation today?
